Minimal formulation of the linear spatial analysis of capillary jets: Validity of the two-mode approach

A rigorous and complete formulation of the linear evolution of harmonically stimulated capillary jets should include infinitely many spatial modes to account for arbitrary exit conditions [J. Guerrero et al., J. Fluid Mech. 702, 354 (2012)]. However, it is not rare to find works in which only the downstream capillary dominant mode, the sole unstable one, is retained, with amplitude determined by the jet deformation at the exit. This procedure constitutes an oversimplification, unable to handle a flow rate perturbation without jet deformation at the exit (the most usual conditions). In spite of its decaying behavior, the other capillary mode (subdominant) must be included in what can be called a “minimal linear formulation.” Deformation and mean axial velocity amplitudes at the jet exit are the two relevant parameters to simultaneously find the amplitudes of both capillary modes. Only once these amplitudes are found, the calculation of the breakup length may be eventually simplified by disregarding the subdominant mode. Simple recipes are provided for predicting the breakup length, which are checked against our own numerical simulations. The agreement is better than in previous attempts in the literature. Besides, the limits of validity of the linear formulation are explored in terms of the exit velocity amplitude, the wave number, the Weber number, and the Ohnesorge number. Including the subdominant mode extends the range of amplitudes for which the linear model gives accurate predictions, the criterion for keeping this mode being that the breakup time must be shorter than a given formula. It has been generally assumed that the shortest intact length happens for the stimulation frequency with the highest growth rate. However, we show that this correlation is not strict because the amplitude of the dominant mode has a role in the breakup process and it depends on the stimulation frequency.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Spain, under Contract No. FIS2014-25161Junta de Andalucía under Contract No. P11-FQM-791

    Get PDF
Before the shortage of investigations around the discursive mechanisms that promote the knowledge shared, it is done necessary to continue the investigation around the educational strategies that promote the construction joint of the knowledge among the students. Two teachers, under a same task of discussion, they assume different goals that are going to influence in the elaboration of diverse strategies of construction of the knowledge. This article themselves center in the process of joint elaboration of the information. For it: (1) We devise a categories of analysis that permit to deepen in the joint construction of the knowledge from the reading of stories; (2) We offer the description of diverse didactic sequences in function of this system of observation, and (3) We analyze and we compare the evolution of the strategies of interaction, unfolded in the two groups observed, by the teachers and on the part of the students. The sample is formed by two classes of two public schools of Burgos (Spain), and Tampico (México). In each class 6 groups of 3 children are observed. The decision on what children they form part of each group has delegated itself in the teachers. The joint analysis offers a very useful difference between two strategies of learning, that are keys in the narrations reading objectives: recovery and comprehension. The knowledge limited of the world and of the human actions compromises directly the comprehension, and the shortage of communicative and narrative abilities complicates the recovery

For it is analyzed in depth the case of the network of classrooms and art workshops Cultural Promotion ITESO, through the review of a research project that recovered the experience, serving as feedback for the institution itself. In the development of this research points to a number of criteria, and identified different lines of research that might favor a "proactive approach to creativity," confirm the figure of the artist-educator, little known in the university context, and a type of teaching that has been called "appreciative and / or generative" focused on shaping attitudes. This experience could serve as a model for other institutions, when it comes to open spaces in the form of group and affective networks beyond formal education, where each institution could build their responses according to their needs and knowledge contexts. We have witnessed a process of development. The emotional awakening of creation as an evolutionary process, where ideas become real experiences opens. Comunicación presentada en: 18th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition, CIARP 2013; Havana; Cuba; 20-23 November 2013The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-41827-3_50This paper reports an analysis of the benefits of using color information on a region-based face recognition system. Three different color spaces are analysed (RGB, YCbCr, lαβ) in a very challenging scenario matching good quality mugshot images against video surveillance images. This scenario is of special interest for forensics, where examiners carry out a comparison of two face images using the global information of the faces, but paying special attention to each individual facial region (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.). This work analyses the discriminative power of 15 facial regions comparing both the grayscale and color information. Results show a significant improvement of performance when fusing several regions of the face compared to just using the whole face image. A further improvement of performance is achieved when color information is consideredThis work has been partially supported by contract with Spanish Guardia Civil and projects BBfor2 (FP7-ITN-238803), bio-Challenge (TEC2009-11186), Bio Shield (TEC2012-34881), Contexts (S2009/TIC-1485), TeraSense (CSD2008-00068) and "Cátedra UAM-Telefónica

Fractional Integration Analysis and its Implications on Profitability: the Case of the Mackerel Market in the Basque Country

This paper analyses weekly prices for mackerel landed by the inshore fleet at the ports of the Basque Country in 1995-2008, using new econometric techniques never before applied to the fishing market. The idea is to learn to what extent fishermen can pass on the effects of negative shocks (e.g. fuel price increases) to their ex-vessel prices. This will give an idea of the profitability of the fishery in question. To that end, a cyclical ARFIMA model is adjusted to the series analysed, then the impulse-response function is constructed. Among other things, the behaviour of this function shows that possible increases in production costs are not being passed on to prices, which lowers the profitability of fishing. In view of these results, it is suggested that fishermen need to be able to pass the shocks that they suffer on to prices if the profitability of this fleet is to be assured.long memory, seasonality, fishing market, mackerel, impulse response function
